Jacob Hess, son of Samuel Hess, pioneer of that name of the Pequea colony, came over a long part of the same trail, and built his home near the site of the present Hess meetinghouse one mile east of Lititz, in 1734. Christian EBY and Fronica REIFF were married about 1774.84 Christian EBY145 was born on 22 Feb 1734.91,145 He died on 14 Sep 1807.91 CHRISTIAN EBY, a grandson of Theodorus Eby who was born on the first Eby homestead on the Hammer Creek, February 22, 1734, just two years after the birth of Wash-ington, was the first deacon in the newly organized congre-gation, which has now grown to include the entire Hammer Creek bishop district. The date of his ordination is not known, but references to his duties and services in the Church point us to some time prior to the Revolution. He died Sept. 14, 1807, at the age of 73 years. There is little known as to his personal work, except that the congregation was so well organized and cared for by him and his ministerial brother, Christian Bomberger, the first preacher in the col-ony, that their work for the Church is a lasting monument to their memory. There were no separate meetinghouses in the colony during his lifetime, but he and his wife, who was Catherine Bricker, opened their dwelling, which was one of the largest in the community, as a place for regular services for many years. This house is still standing, originally built by the venerable deacon's father, Christian Eby, in 1754, and the historic barn, ninety-nine feet long, built by the dea-con himself, also remains in good condition as first design-ed. They are now owned by Harry H. Brubaker, a de-scendant of the family. The erection of this barn is men-tioned because of the reason for building it one foot short of one hundred feet. The devout leader of his people did not desire to exceed the length of another barn in the vicin-ity. This large and influential family being in constant contact with the people of God, in their home and religious community, imbibed the spirit of their noted father, and several of their sons are often mentioned in the history and in the development of the Mennonite Church. One of them was Bishop Peter Eby, of the Pequea district, and another was Bishop Benjamin Eby, pioneer minister and bishop in Waterloo county, Ontario. Another deserves special men-tion as being the mainstay and possibly the originator of the German Land Company, by which the early Mennonite set-tlers in Waterloo county, Ontario, were saved from financial ruin and started on the royal road to success. This was John Eby, of Hammer Creek, who was married into the Wit-mer family of Weaverland, from which two sections the company drew its financial strength and the Church its religious support in the project of freeing 60,000 acres of mortgaged land in that new country which included many homes of their kinsmen and brethren in Canada. The fam-ily ties, as well as the brotherly fellow feeling, among thebrotherhood of Lancaster county were strengthened and their relations with the Canadian church were pleasant and upbuilding to both bodies of believers. Besides the final out-come was profitable in every way to both parties in the deal-ings which they had with one another. This venerable leader of the Church has been erron-eously called a bishop instead of a deacon, which no doubt was started by some one not familiar with the terms of officers or servants in the Mennonite Church and unthink-ingly copied and often repeated by historians and others without investigation. In nearly all the deeds of convey-ances by which the Mennonite Church in Lancaster county holds property, in which the names of deacons appear and are used, (and there are many such) , their titles or distinctions are invariably, "Elder," or "Elders." Theodorus (Durst) EBY147 was born on 25 Apr 1663 in Emmental, Canton Berne, Switzerlan.22,81 He died on 17 Dec 1727.22 THEODORUS EBY, son of Bishop Jacob Eby, of the Mennonite Church in Zurich, Switzerland, left his boyhood home in 1704, and went to the Palatinate where he re-mained eleven years. When the persecutions of his people became unbearable, he, with his family of sons and one daughter, and other coreligionists and their families, came to America. In 1715, this family settled on Mill Creek, two miles southwest from the present site of New Holland, where they with their own hands constructed the first grist mill in this region, from the trees and stones in the forest on the land which they had afterwards patented to them. The place was known, in order of succession, as Eby's, Ryan's, Roland's, and now for many years Hoober's mill. It is quite close to Zeltenreich's Reformed Church, lying between the Upper Conestoga and the Pequea settlements. This family, besides being zealous in their devotions and well versed in mechanical skill, also had a broad vision of the requirements of the settlement of a new country. Their first homes and mill were selected and built along an old Indian trail, which extended southeasterly to beautiful hunting and fishing grounds of extensive area, formed around the big springs, and along the head waters of the Pequea, Mill Creek, Brandywine, Octoraro, and their small tributaries in this region, on the southern slopes and inclines of the Welsh Mountains, the trail passing the choice of their settlements northwesterly, crossing the Conestoga, and the Cocalico, and extending through the sections drained by the Hammer Creek, into the broad expanse of the two Chickies Creeks and opening on the Susquehanna. This same trail, used by the early Indian traders, and part of its length made famous by Peter Bizellion, whose name it bears as a public highway, was also used by the stalwart sons of the Eby family, and other Men-nonites in exploring the country east and west of their homes, several of their families locating in Hammer Creek Valley, where they were joined by the Brubakers and others o£ the second generation from the Hershey-Brubaker colony west of Lancaster.
