This land was part of the 370 acres surveyed for David Martin on Feb. 21, 1738.+ Oral tradition was that the Weber brothers reserved this tract of land for their "brother-in-law" David Martin. However, Darvin Martin argues and I think rightly that David Martin probably inherited this land by marriage when he married Henry Miller's Widow. Spouse: Barbara HERR. Jorg KUNDIG and Ursula MULLER were married on 20 Apr 1697 in Pfaffikon.12 Barbara MUMMA8 died on 14 Nov 1840 in Sharpsburg, Washington Co., MD.8 She was born about1765 in hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA.8 She was buried in Mumma Family Cemetery, Sharpsburg, Washington Co., MD.8 Much confusion has existed regarding the daughter of George Anthony Mumma named Barbara. In Richard Huffman's 1971 book, he assigned the Barbara Mumma, wife of Henry Strickler, as the daughter of George Anthony Mumma. No evidence for this attachment can be found and as a result, she as been reassigned as an unidentified Mumma branch called U-35. There is the possibility that she is the daughter of Frederick Mumma, son of the immigrant, Jacob Mumma [1], however there is no evidence to make this attachment, either. There is a Barbara Mumma's tombstone that can be found in the Mumma Graveyard located in Sharpsburg, Maryland. From the tombstone, we estimate her birth year to be about 1765. It is here where Barbara's brothers, Jacob and Henry Mumma, migrated between 1796 and 1798. It is believed by the author that she was the next youngest child of George Anthony Mumma and his wife, Barbara Weber. After their father died in 1786 and mother in 1788, I believe that Barbara lived with her brother, Jacob, on the family farm in Hempfield Township and moved with him to Leacock Township in 1792 when he purchased land there. Later he sold everything and moved to Sharpsburg, Maryland in 1796. A few days before his land purchase, Joseph Sherrick also purchased a large tract of land from the Orndorff family and I believe that they moved there together from Lancaster, PA. After Joseph Sherrick's wife, Barbara Newcomer Hertzler, died in 1804, it is likely that Joseph married (or lived with) Barbara Mumma to raise his children who were only about 14, 10, 6 and 3 years old. She was well know to him and was unmarried at about age 40. No records of this marriage have been found. They lived together for another 35 years until Barbara's death in 1840. One interesting and perplexing fact is the inscriptions on the tombstones for both of his wives. In most cases, wives are listed using their married surnames, but in the case of Jacob, both wives are listed with their maiden names. It almost raises the queston as to whether he ever "married" them and whether they were simply "common law" wives. Apparently there were no children from the union of Joseph Sherrick and Barbara Mumma. The calculated birth date for Barbara fits appropriately in the listing of George Anthony Mumma's children and just before the youngest son, Jacob. The inscription on her tombstone says: Barbara Mumma w/o Joseph Sherrick Sr. age 75 yrs., d. 14 Nov 1840 From Barbara's Mother's Will, we know that she was single when her mother wrote her will in 1788 and that she had remained with her parents for 3 years over her age. If we assume that her mother meant that she lived with both George and Barbara for 3 years over her age, then she would have been age 21 when her father died in 1786. This calculates to a birth year of 1765, the same that is calculated from the tombstone data. The children of Joseph Sherrick were very friendly with the Mumma family (and rightfully so if they were raised by their step-mother, Barbara Mumma) and they allowed the Samuel Mumma family to live in their house while their house was being rebuilt after is was burned down durning the Battle of Antietam. Parents: George Anthony MUMMA and Beverly WEBER. Spouse: Joseph SHERRICK. Joseph SHERRICK and Barbara MUMMA were married.8 Christian MUMMA8 was born between 1745 and 1750 in Lancaster Co, PA.8 He died in 1797 in Rapho Twp., Lancaster Co., PA.8 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From the latest DNA results from the Mumma Surname DNA project, we conclude that the Christian Mumma who remained in Rapho Township was incorrectly attached as a son of Jacob Mumma, the son of immigrant Jacob Mumma. The DNA "fingerprint" from descendants of Christian Mumma of Rapho Township, Lancaster Co., clearly have the distinctive DNA pattern that belongs to all descendants of the immigrant, Leonard Mumma. As a result, Christian Mumma of Rapho Township has now been re-attached as the oldest son of George Anthony Mumma. Some of the research about two Christian Mummas is listed below for completeness and general information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ An important document for this family is a family bible given to Christian Mumma's son, Abraham, in 1813 when he was married. In the bible, Abraham recorded the death of his mother, the names of his siblings and their births as well as his children. For a long time, little was known about Christian Mumma, George Anthony Mumma's son. He was not favorably enriched by his father's Will. His father indicated that he had "provided for Christian previously" - whatever that means. Quite possibly he helped him acquire land. We believe he was the oldest son. From the likely births of the other children, we speculate his birth to be between 1745 and 1750. Ira Landis of the Mennonite Society speculated as to whether or not the Christian Mumma who appeared in Rapho Twp. might be this Christian, the son of George Anthony Mumma. Initially I believed this to be wrong because the Christian Mumma of Rapho Twp had been recorded and attached as a descendant of the immigrant, Jacob Mumma. However, further research has revealed that there were two Christian Mummas living in Rapho Twp. [Note - Much of the following information about the two Christian Mummas of Rapho Township, Lancaster Co., PA was found by Jane Moomau Doughty in her quest to discover the parents of Christian Mummer of Augusta County, VA] 1) Christian Mumma's birth has been estimated to be between 1745-1750. It is not clear whether his mother was Alice Baughman, George Anthony Mumma's first wife, or his 2nd wife, Barbara Weber. We believe his mother was Barbara Weber. 2) Two Christian Mumas appears on the Hempfield tax lists of Lancaster County from 1777 to 1779. In 1777, an additional fee or tax was imposed on a large number of men in the exact same amount of ú3.10. This was a common amount charged to all "Non-Associators" who were eligible men whose religion forbid them from fighting in the Revolutionary War. I presume the following Mummas were on this list since they, or their parents, followed the Mennonite or Church of the Brethren religions. George Muma John Muma Henry Muma Christian Muma Christian Muma It is surprising that two Christian Mumas are listed. The only way I can explain this is to presume that Rapho Township men were included in the Hempfield listing at this time. This data suggests that there were 2 Christian Mummas living in the Hempfield/Rapho townships. 3) In 1778, a Christian, George, Henry and John Mumma all appear on the Lancaster County Muster Roll lists under the command of Capt. James Barder. Further evidence suggest that they did serve. This would further suggest that in all likelihood, Christian, George and Henry were brothers. John would have been their 1st cousin. John acquired 200 acres from David Mumma (son of the immigrant Leonard Mumma) in 1775. This John Mumma later migrated to York County and was the founder of Mummasburg, PA. [Note - Much of the following information about the other Christian Mumma of Rapho Township, Lancaster Co., PA was found by Jane Moomau Doughty in her quest to discover the parents of Christian Mummer of Augusta County, VA] 4) On 7 Jan 1784, a Christian Muma of Rapho Township sells to Stephen Wenger all of his personal property (1 horse, 3 cows and all household goods including beds, pots, etc. for ú110.13.4 which seems like a lot of money in those days for personal property) This would certainly suggest someone who preparing to leave the area. No wife is mentioned, but if he had one, her signature would probably not be required for the sale of personal property. [Lancaster Co. Deed book Z, Vol 1, pages 10-11] 5) On 25 Mar 1785, Christian Muma of Rapho Twp. buys 264 acres of land on the Cacapon River in Hampshire Co., VA from John Mishy (Meshia) and his wife, also of Rapho Twp. for a price of ú200 Pennsylvania money. [Lancaster Co Deed book 7, pages 21-24] Since the other Christian Mumma remains in Rapho County, we can conclude that there were two Christian Mummas, one who remained in Rapho Township and the other who migrated to Hampshire County, VA. 6) Christian Muma appears on the 1787 Census of Virginia for Hampshire County. No additional males living in the family between the ages of 16 to 21, no slaves, 1 horse, 3 cattle. [It is clear that this Christian Mumma is not the "Christian Mummer" who appears in Augusta County, Va and is the progenitor of the MOOMAU family.] 7) In 1788 Christian Muma and his wife, Nancy, of Hampshire Co., VA sell 46 acres of land of his Hampshire property to a Daniel Miller. [Emmert Bittinger's book, "Allegheny Passage, Churches and Families, West Marva District, Church of the Brethren, 1752-1990".] 8) On 10 June 1793, Christian Muma and his wife, Ann, sell 12 1/2 acres of their Hampshire property to a John Kenner for the price of ú18. [Hampshire County VA Deed book 9 pg 149-151]. The "Nancy" listed in the previous document was probably just his wife's nickname since Nancy was a common nickname for Ann in Virginia. 9) On 9 April 1794, Christian Muma and his wife, Ann, sell 205 acres (the remaining balance of their Hampshire land) to Daniel Weller for ú265 current Virginia money. [Hampshire County VA Deed book 9, pp339-341] ------------------------------------------------------- A couple of observations and thoughts. o It is clear that there were 2 Christian Mummas living in Rapho Township of Lancaster County in the 1770/1780's. o Strange that Christian would sell all of his personal property in 1784. Probably has no wife while living in Rapho Township? o Christian can sign his name on all documents (fairly rare ability for this generation of Mummas). o Although the name of "Nancy" and "Ann" appear on the various deeds, it is probably the same person. "Nancy" was a commonly used nickname in Virginia for "Ann". o Christian and his wife probably left the area after selling their remaining Hampshire County property in 1794. o No children or other descendants have been identified. ------------------------------------------------------------ It is unclear from whom the Hampshire County VA Christian Mumma descends. There are two likely candidates. One is the Christian Mumma, a son of Jacob Mumma, a son of immigrant Jacob Mumma or a son of Frederick Mumma, the other son of immigrant Jacob Mumma. Data source is "The Mumma Family" by Samuel H. Mumma 1962 & Moomaw book 1990 Source of the children is from the 1805 bible which belonged to his son, Abraham. Parents: George Anthony MUMMA and Beverly WEBER. David MUMMA8 was born between 1756 and 1764.8 David's birth year is speculative, based on the facts that he was likely the 3rd youngest child. Jacob is known through his father will to be the youngest son as he had not reached the age of majority when his father's will was written in 1785. Also, we know that he appeared on the tax rolls in 1787, but was not listed on the "non-associators" tax list of 1777. Therefore, he was definitely born after 1756, but before 1764. In his father's Will written in 1785, David was given the opportunity to purchase approximately 100 acres of his father's estate. His father died in 1786 and David was assessed in 1787-1788 Hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA. He no longer appears on the tax rolls, suggesting that he sold the land and migrated elsewhere. We know that David was alive and had children in 1793 through the Will of Jacob Hertzler. Jacob married David's sister, Maria Mumma. Maria died shortly after her marriage to Jacob and was still owed money from her brother, Henry. Jacob stipulated in his will that Maria's portion of the monies due her should be distributed to the children of her brothers, George and David. There has been speculation that this David is the same David who is listed as U7-1, David Muma, b. abt 1760. David Mumma disapears from Lancaster County about 1790 and this David Muma appears in the 1810 census of Shenandoah Co. Va. as head of family. Parents: George Anthony MUMMA and Beverly WEBER. Elizabeth MUMMA. Parents: George Anthony MUMMA and Alice BAUGHMAN. Spouse: John CARLE. George MUMMA8 was born on 22 Dec 1752 in hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA.8 He died on 9 May 1835 in Westmoreland Co., PA.8 +++++++++++++ Note by Doug Mumma++++++++++++++++++ Birth date of George Muma, son of George Anthony Mumma George Muma's birth date has been calculated from his tombstone information which have been transcribed as "GEORG MUMA IST GESTORBEN DEN 9 MAY INT JAHR 1835 SEID ALTER DAR 72 YAHR 4 MONATE UND 18 TAGE". A translation of this is "Georg Muma died on May 9, 1835 at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 18 days ". Using this data and a "tombstone calculator" yields a calculated birth of 22 Dec 1762 which has been used in all records for George. I have recently reviewed the tax records of Hempfield township of Lancaster County, PA during the 1700's. The outcome of this study revealed some interesting dates for George Muma Jr. He first appears on the Hempfield tax records as owning land in 1775. If he was born in 1762, this would mean he owned land at the age of 13. Typically, a man in Pennsylvania only owned land when he reached his age of majority so this would suggest that the 1762 birth year for George is in error. In addition, George and sever of his brothers appear on the "non-associators" tax list of 1777. Men on this list were Mennonites or of other faiths who refused to take up arms in the Revolutionary war and were assessed ú3.10. This is further proof that a birth year of 1762 for George would be incorrect, especially since his younger brother, Henry also appears on this list. A summary of these tax lists can be viewed in the MUMMA archives at http://www.mumma.org/archives/HempfieldTaxes.html One other piece of evidence is is the 1800 census for Westmoreland County, South Huntington Township for August 1, 1800. Both George and his son, Jacob are listed under the surname spelling of MOMMEY. In this census listing, George is listed as being older than 45 years which would mean he was born before 1755. As we all know, the census listings are not always that accurate, but it is another piece of data suggesting a birth date for George much earlier than 1762. So, what does one believe? I personally believe that the tax records are more correct because they were created much closer to the time of his birth and by people not emotionally involved with a death. Information on a tombstone is typically not provided by the person themselves and is recorded many years after the birth. We know most of the children had moved from the area at this time and whoever provided the birth/death information may have simply made an error in the birth year or the stone cutter made a calculational error. Tombstone weathering could possibly have changed the age of "82" years to look like "72" years. No matter what the case, I suggest that a birth year exactly 10 years earlier is probably correct. If he was really born in 1752, then he would have entered the tax rolls in 1775 at about the age of 22-23, which is much more believable. In addition, such a birth year allows his younger brothers and sisters to be more typically spaced about 2 years apart instead of 1 year or less that is necessary if his birth year was 1762. Therefore, against the evidence transcribed from his tombstone, I believe the information on the Hempfield tax rolls is more reliable and accurate. This is why I have adjusted George Mumma/Muma's birth date from 22 Dec 1762 to 22 Dec 1752. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The following was printed by Richard Glenn Huffman, P.O. Box 10, Whitney PA 15693 in his 1971 book about George Muma. HISTORY OF GEORGE MUMA B 12/22/1762 D 5/9/1835, SON OF GEORGE ANTHONY MUMMA GEORGE MUMA SR. B 12/22/1762 D 5/9/1835, is one of the sons of GEORGE ANTHONY MUMMA, and grandson of LEONARD MUMMA. There is some evidence to suggest that George Muma Sr. might be the eldest son. In his mother's will George Muma is named first, however since George Anthony and Barbara were already married in 1750, as a deed indicates, it seems unlikely that no son would have been born till twelve years later. It is worth noting, that in George Anthony Mumma's will, his son George was not bequeathed any real property, only an equal share of the residue and remainder of his estate which amounted to 211 pounds. Again in Barbara Mumma's will, her son George Muma is bequeathed only one sterling shilling, as his full share of her estate, " he having had great advantage in bequests made to him by his father". This researcher was unable to find any evidence of financial help given to George Muma Sr. by his father, from the available records in the courthouse. However as many as eight of George Muma's children were born before he purchased his own farm in Manor Twp. Lancaster County in 1790. It is therefore possible that George's father contributed a great deal to the support of his family prior to the time he secured his own farm. Thus we might assume that George Mumma Sr. lived on his father's farm in Hempfield Twp, and raised his children there, up to March 6, 1790. The deed books of Lancaster County give us some record of George Muma's life while he remained in that county. D.B. # HH 331 dated Mar. 6, 1790, George Mumma of Manor Twp. and Catherine his wife are financially bound to Jacob Garver, (his father in law in the amount of 1,159 pounds (579 pounds due May 1, 1792 for a 65 acre tract in Manor Twp. along the Little Conestogo Creek. This was a mortgage, which could not be paid off in the specified time. In D.B. # 00 242 on Nov. 1, 1792 the mortgage was renewed and consisted of 19 bonds and 19 penalties which ran until 1810 for last payment. Or, May 28, 1794 the mortgage amounting to a total of 730 pounds, was paid off. Apparently from the money he received when he sold this same property on April 26, 1794. D.B. HH 476 dated Sept 20, 1790 is a mortgage on George Mumma of Manor Twp. for 25 pounds owed to Rudolph Whisler. George mortgages two copper stills, however the mortgage was void if payment was made before July 26, 1791. The record shows full satisfaction was made when the sum was paid on March 26, 1793, 20 months overdue. D.B. 00 242 dated Nov. 1, 1792, mentioned above states that the 65 acre tract was sold to George Mumma on October 31, 1792 by Jacob Garber and his wife Mary. The author is confused as to why D.B. HH 331 dated Mar. 6, 1790 was replaced by the later mortgage, unless the 1,159 pounds due on first mortgage was scaled down to the total of 730 pounds. D.B. # SS 107 dated April 26, 1794 shows George Muma of Manor Twp. and Catherine his wife, Yoeman, sold to Abraham Peter, distiller, for 1500 pounds: a tract of 65 acres. This tract was part of the Conostoga Manor and was marked # 4 in the plan of the Manor. ( It is the same tract conveyed by John Penn Jr., one of the late proprietaries, by his attorney Anthony Butler of Philadelphia on April 29, 1788; recorded in Letter of Attorney Book ,# 2, page 368. And conveyed by John Penn Sr., Proprietary of Pa., by his attorney on Nov. 19, 1787; recorded in Philadelphia in the same Attorney Book #2 page 364.) This tract patented on June 1, 1791 unto Jacob Garber, was then resold by Jacob and Mary Garber to George Muma Sr.; recorded in PP 609. The land included houses and buildings thereon when resold to Abraham Peter on April 26, 1794. D.B.# PP 609 dated November 20, 1792 shows Jacob Garber of Donegal Twp. and Mary his wife sold 65 acres in Manor Twp. for 687 pounds to George Mumma of Manor Twp. This deed represents the third mortgage on this same property and mentions a different price. The above deeds show George Muma Sr. moved onto the property in Manor Twp. about March 6, 1790 before his father in law received the patent by the Commonwealth on June 1, 1791. He lived here in Manor Twp. until he sold the property on April 26, 1794. It is unlikely buildings existed on the property before being patented by the Commonwealth, therefore George Muma Sr. must have built the farm buildings mentioned when he sold the property. Possibly something happened in Lancaster Co. that angered George Muma Sr. A terse note was found in the courthouse dated April 6, 1794 stating that George was moving to Canada. However he apparently changed his mind, for on September 1, 1794 he purchased 291 acres in East Huntingdon Twp. Westmoreland County, Pa. near the present town of Scottdale. We are fortunate to have been provided positive proof that George Muma Sr. of Manor Twp. Lancaster Co., is the same George Muma who settled in East Huntington Twp. Westmoreland Co. The translated will of Jacob Gerber appears in Lancaster Co. Will Book # x 244. Written in 1800, his will was probated January 20, 1801 and lists his children: Catherine, Andrew, Mary, Ada, John, Ann, and. Christian. Regarding the settlement of his estate we have the following revealing document filed in the records of Westmoreland County. Westmoreland County Deed Book #N3 page 453, recorded on July 19, 1803, states: We George Mumma of the township of East Huntingdon, in the County of Westmoreland, Yoeman, and Catharine his wife, (late Catharine Gerber one of the daughters of Jacob Gerber, late of the township of Donegal, Lancaster Co. Yoeman, deceased. Received from Jacob Gerber in his lifetime, a total amount of 306 pounds, 8 shillings, and one penny. Also since the death of Jacob Gerber, and from Andrew Gerber and John Gerber, executors of the last will and testament of Jacob Gerber deceased, the further sum of 154 pounds, 11 shillings, 5 pence, and 2 penny in specia. Amounting together to the aggregate sum of 460 pounds, 19 shillings, 6 pence, and a half penny. In full of and for our part or share, ( in right of the said Catharine) of and in the personal estate of the said Jacob Gerber deceased, by or under his last will and testament dated March 6, 1800. Released executors from further claims. Written August 6, 1802. Recorded in Westmoreland Co. July 19, 1803 On Sept. 1, 1794 (Ref. Westmd. Co. D.B. # 4 336 George Mumma of Huntingdon Twp. purchased from Robert Newell and wife Christina 291 acres, for 750 pounds. The tract was patented to Robert Newell on May 23, 1794 and contained a house thereon when sold to George Muma Sr. [When George paid off his mortgage to his father in law, Jacob Gerber, after selling his property in Manor Twp., he had left 770 pounds, and he had given up 65 acres in Lancaster for 291 acres on the frontier in Westmoreland County.] On May 18, 1798 George Muma Sr. made another purchase. (Ref. D.B. # 4 340)a James Duncan and wife Mary of Allegheny Co. sold to George Mooma of South Huntingdon Twp. 66 acres for 338 pounds. The land. bordered property already owned by George, and also the property of Martin Overhold. This tract granted to James Duncan by patent Dec. 27, 1797. On March 25, 1808 (Ref D.B. # 8 530) George Muma of Huntingdon Twp. and Cathy his wife sold 4 acres to George Mumaw Jr. for $80.00, a part of the Robert Newell tract. On November 23, 1809 (Ref. D.B. 8 529) George Muma Sr. and Catherine his wife sold to George Mumaw Jr. 96 acres for 482 pounds. This tract included the entire 66 acres purchased on May 18, 1798 plus 30 acres of the Robert Newell tract. On February 15, 1812,(Ref. D.B. 9 page 452 George Muma Jr. and Catherine his wife of East Huntingdon Twp. sold to David Mumaw 852L acres for 502 pounds 10 shillings. This is part of the tract Robert Newell and Christina granted unto George Muma partie of these presents. Note: A mistake is apparently being made in drafting this deed, George Mumaw Jr. has only purchased 30 acres of this Newell tract on Nov. 23, 1809, therefore could not sell 85 1/2 acres of this tract. Also the partie of these presents which purchased the tract from Robert Newell was George Muma Sr.. Therefore it seems only logical that David Mumaw Sr. purchased this 85 1/2 acres from his father George Muma Sr., not his brother as the deed seems to indicate.] David's brother Andrew Mumaw was a witness to this deed, the only record of him found in Westmoreland Co. documents, indicating he had not yet went to Ohio in February of 1812. On May 17, 1815 (Ref. D.B. # 11 243) David Mumaw and Mary his wife of East Huntington Twp. sold to George Muma Sr., 8 acres for $200.00. This tract included buildings, and was purchased by David from Abraham Walts and wife Elizabeth on April 1, 1812. George Muma Sr. had a son JACOB MUMAW, who had owned property in Bullskin Twp. Fayette Co., Pa., and sold this property on April 1, 1812. It is rumored that Jacob , son of George Muma Sr. was alchoholic, certainly his father's will written in 1834 indicates Jacob was unable to care for himself. On this occasion in 1815 George Muma Sr. purchases this 8 acres with buildings for the sole use and benefit of Barbara Noftsinger Mumaw, Jacob's second wife, for her benefit during her natural life, at her decease, the tract to go to her children born of her body. On March 23, 1830 (Ref. D.B. # 18 353) David Mumaw of East Huntingdon Twp. and Mary his wife for $1100.00 sold to George Mumaw Jr., 37 acres. This tract was part of the 852 acres sold to David by his father George Muma Sr. on Feb. 15, 1812. On June 15, 1833 ( Ref. D.B. 21 170) George Muma Sr. of East Huntingdon Twp. sold 197 acres to George Mumaw Jr. for $4,000.00. This is the remainder of the tract sold to George Muma Sr. by Robert Newell on September 1, 1794. This above disposal of George Muma Sr's property represents the transfer of the last of his property in Westmoreland Co. to his sons. And it is apparently this deed above mentioned, which he refers to in his will written November 10, 1834 However, George Yuma Sr. owned other property beside that in Westmoreland Co. This property was purchased on June 12, 1805. (Ref. Fayette Co. Pa. Deed Book # F 96). It consisted of 239 acres, and was located on Brown's Run in German Twp. Fayette Co. Purchased from Andrew Coffman and wife Mary for 797 pounds. The tract was known as "FAIRFIELD" and was granted on May 23, 1800 by patent to Abraham Stewart, who sold it on July 19, 1800 to Andrew Coffman, who in turn sold it to George Muma Sr. on June 12, 1805. On May 13, 1814 (Ref. Fayette Co. D.B. # M 189) George Mumma of East Huntingdon Twp. sold 147 acres of land on Browns Run to Mathias Lecrone for 51,963.00. This tract being the one part of the 244 acres purchased June 12, 1805. [Mathias Lecrone's son John, later married Nancy, daughter of George Muma Sr. I, On June 7, 1815, (Ref. Fayette Co. D.B. # K 333) George Mumah of East Huntington Twp. Westmd. Co. and Catherine his wife, sold to Jacob Fraattz (Jacob Fritz) of Fayette Co. for 530 pounds, 106 acres of the total tract of 244 acres purchased on June 12, 1805. [Jacob Fretz was married to Mary Muma, George Muma Sr's eldest daughter.] The property sold in Fayette Co. on May 14, 1814 to Mathias Lecrone, and consisting of 147 acres was divided among Mathias Lecrone's sons, at the time of the partitioning of his property after his death in January 1831. Daniel Leckrone received 94 acres and his brother John Leckron received 36 acres. It was John who later married Nancy Muma. On November 10, 1834, George Muma Sr. wrote his will. On May 9, 1835 he died. His tombstone still stands in Alverton Cemetery in 1971 bearing the inscription; GEORG MUMA IST GESTORBEN DEN 9 MAY INT JAHR 1835 SEID ALTER DAR 72 YAHR 4 MONATE UND 18 TAGE. The migrations of his children were: MARY MUMA to German Twp. Fayette Co. Pa.; JACOB MUMMA to Bullskin Twp. in Fayette Co.; JOHN MOMMA to Adams County, Indiana; ANDREW MUMAW to Paint Twp., Holmes County, Ohio; NANCY MUMMA is buried beside her father, but he husband and children moved to Perry County, Ohio; BARBARA MUMMA was married in Tuscarawas Co. Ohio to John Jacob Shoup, and later moved to another county in Ohio. JACOB MUMMA's tombstone is not found at Alverton cemetery where his father is buried, his wife Barbara is there, all his children moved to Holmes County, Ohio. GEORGE MUMAW JR., DAVID MUMAW SR., CATHERINE MUMA, all lived out their lives near their father and are buried beside him. At the sale held for George Muma's personal property, his Bible was sold to Michael Myers for $.63. None of his sons or daughters who attended the sale were apparently interested in this book which probably contained the birth dates missing an unobtainable today. Parents: George Anthony MUMMA and Beverly WEBER. Spouse: Catherine GERBER. George MUMMA and Catherine GERBER were married. George Anthony MUMMA8 was born in 1722.350 He died in 1786 in hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA.19 George Anthony is first identified on the captains list of passengers for Palantines who arrived in Philadelphia on September 18, 1732 aboard the ship, "Johnson", commanded by David Crocket. Anthony Momma, the eldest son, along with his two younger brothers are identified as being boys under 16 years of age. His two sisters are also listed. This is the only record upon which his name is listed as Anthony (or Antoni). All other records, including church, tax, deed, and his Will only show his given name as George. Through the process of elimination and alternate documents, we can confirm this Anthony to be George. Why the ship's captain made the error in writing his name, we will never know. For this reason, he will always be known and identified as "George Anthony Mumma", even though he never used the middle name of Anthony. Since of his brothers born in America had two given names at the time of baptism, most likely George also had two names, but chose to only use the one. We have only recently discovered that Geoge Anthony Mumma had a first wife by the name of Alice Baughman, daughter of John Baughman who lived in Hempfield Township of Lancaster County*. While George was brought up in a Lutheran/Reformed Church setting and environment, he married Barbara Weber (Beverly Weaver) who was a Mennonite. Barbara is a descendant of Henry Weber and Maudlin Kendig. Maudlin's grandparents were colonists on the first ship load of Mennonites who arrived on the ship "PEQUEA" and settled in the Pequea Valley near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. While it is interesting to have such interesting and famous Mennonite ancestors, George and Barbara's children have no church birth or baptismal records because the Mennonite Church didn't record such events. For this reason we don't know the precise data of many of his children's birth dates. George first received a grant for 175 acres land in Hempfield Township from the Penn Family on May 10, 1748. He sells off 20 acres of this grant for ú31 on 26 July 1750. Barbara was required to sign her name and relinquish her dower rights so we know that they were married prior to this date. On December 1, 1767, he purchased an additional 202 acres from the estate of George Smith. From 1758 until his death in 1786, George appears on the Assessment Lists for Hempfield Township. On the 2 November 1763, he loaned 82 pounds to Frederick Mumma of Donegal Township, taking a mortgage for 150 pounds on Fredericks's farm of 233 acres. This is an important document because it clearly demonstrates that George was fairly close to this Frederick Mumma. No direct relationship has been established between these two men, however. Prior to his death, George owned over 500 acres of land. In his will, he named all of his children, gave three of his sons the opportunity to own approximately a third of his land holdings. Although his exact death date is unknown, he wrote his will on 9 April 1785 and his will was probated on 29 July, 1786, Therefore it is likely that he died sometime in July of 1786. All documents that required his signature only show his Mark, suggesting that he was not literate. His Mark, as he made it on his Will written in 1785, is shown at the top of this page and is quite unique. He used the letters "IMA" and this mark has never been used by anyone else.. Likewise, his wife Barbara was also not literate and she used a styled "P" for her Mark. * The crucial evidence of George Anthony Mumma's first wife is most interesting because it was not discovered in any documents filed in Lancaster County, but in Frederick and Augusta Counties, Virginia. A document was filed in Lancaster County where George Mumma, along with Nicholas Bower, given Letters of Administration on 8 October 1757 for the estate of John Baughman. No other documents relating to this Administration can be found in the Lancaster County records. However, quite by accident, two copies of quit claim deeds were discovered in the Chancery Court files of Augusta County relating to a lawsuit between Hite and Ready. These documents list George Mumma as a beneficiary of John Baughman's estate because George had married one of John's daughters. This daughter had since died, but George maintains an interest in John's estate because he and Alice must have had a child. This is the same George Anthony Mumma of Lancaster County because George Mumma signs one of the documents with his distinctive Mark, "IMA". I have since determined that this child was most likely their eldest daughter, Elizabeth. One strange fact that was previously puzzling was that Elizabeth was given additional monies through her father's Will written in 1785, yet Elizabeth is not even mentioned in George's wife's Will, (Barbara Weber Mumma). We have always wondered why Elizabeth was left off of Barbara's 1788 Will and some researchers speculated that Elizabeth had already died. From a Will written by her sister's husband, Jacob Hertzler, we know that Elizabeth is still alive when Jacob writes his Will in 1793 and after Barbara's deatj in 1788. Now, a reason surfaces as to why Barbara left Elizabeth out of her Will, simply Elizabeth was not her child. While we don't konw when this first marriage took place, we do know that Geoge Anthony was married to Barbara Weber in 1750 because her name appears on the deed of a piece of property that he sells and she signs away her "dower rights". Although we don't know George's exact age, we can make a fairly good educated guess. He was the eldest son, as stated in his mother's will. Since there were 5 children, we can assume the typical "2 years" between children which would make him about 10 years old. We know he was not older than 16 because he was listed as being "under 16 years" on the immigrants list. So, we might assume he was born about 1722, 10 years before the voyage to America, and certainly not earlier than 1716. We might speculate then that he married when he was about 20-22 years of age which would have been about 1742-1744. They probably had a child within a year of marriage and then Alice died soon there after. My guestimate would be that he married about 1742, that Alice was born about 1743-44 and that Alice died about 1746, possibly during the birth of a second child. I would then expect that George would have immediately found a new wife, Barbara Weber, to help his raise his young daughter. These dates are, of course pure speculation, but quite likely. Unfortunately, the births of almost none of the children are known because no baptisms were ever recorded. A more detailed description of the documents relating to the evidence for George's first wife can be downloaded by going to this web address: http://www.mumma.org/archives/IMA.pdf This is in Adobe PDF file format and you will need a PDF reader to view it. Children were: Christian MUMMA, Magdalena MUMMA, George MUMMA, Juliana MUMMA, Henry MUMMA, David MUMMA, Maria MUMMA, Barbara MUMMA, Jacob MUMMA. Henry MUMMA8 was born in 1755/56 in Lancaster Co, PA.8 He died on 20 Oct 1809 in Sharpsburg, Washington Co., MD.8 We know little about Henry's early life. Because his mother and father were Mennonites, his birth was not recorded in any church records. Henry was born and raised in Hempfield township of Lancaster County, PA. He appears on the tax rolls of Hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA from 1777-1796. From this we could assume that he was born about 1756, but not before his brother, George Jr. who I believe was born in 1752. Also, from the 1800 census, he was born after 1755. When his father died in 1786, he was named in his father's will to receive 1/3 of his father's land, but he was required to pay his siblings a fair price for the land he acquired. We believe that Henry found this too large a burden, and sold his piece of the land in 1798. On or before this time we believe that he moved his family to Sharpsburg, Maryland where his brother had moved a few years prior. 1790 Census - Hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA Henry MUMA 2 males over the age of 16 and 3 males less than 16. 2 females of any age This would account for all of their children in 1790 with correct ages. 1800 Census - Hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA Henry MUMA 3 males, age 0-10; 1 male, age 10-16 1 male, age 26-45 (Henry - calculated birth year between 1755-1774 2 females, age 0-10 years, 1 female 16-26 1 female 26-45. In the census, there are the correct number of males, but not in the correct age brackets. There is one extra female listed being between 0-10 years who has not been accounted for. Possibly this child died as an infant and before her father's estate was administered in 1809. Again, one of the girls is in the wrong age bracket. In this census, Henry owned no slaves, but his brother, Jacob owned 2. Henry and his younger brother, Jacob, appear on the tax rolls of Sharpsburg, MD in 1803. These original tax records are stored in the Washington County Public Library, Western Maryland Room. A review of the records reveals that his younger brother was much more wealthy. Henry had one slave, pigs, cows and 1 still, but owned no land. I believe that Henry lived as a tenant on the large parcel of land that his brother, Jacob Mumma, owned. It would appear that he was a weaver, by trade and probably worked in Jacob's mill. Henry died in 1809. His death is recorded in the diary of Christian Newcomer, the "circuit riding" minister and bishop of the United Brethren in Christ Church. Christian was a relative of Henry and had married one of Henry's cousins. Christian wrote the following: "Sunday 22d - We had a Quarterly Meeting at Jacob Thomas's in the old church; I had to leave the meeting and preach a funeral discourse at the burial of Henry Mumma, in Sharpsburg." Although he left no will and died intestate, there is a very complete administration of this estate which is on file in the Maryland archives in Annapolis. these estate filings nicely identify his wife and six children, four boys and two girs. His youngest son and my ancestor, Jacob Mumma, was only 15 years of age at the time of his father's death and he was apprenticed to be a weaver until he was 21 years old. We have not been able track two of the children, Joseph and Mary. Joseph can be traced to about 1830 when he was helping administer the estate of his sister, Barbara, when her husband died. Mary we can trace through several census listing as living with her mother, but nothing after that. Two women have joined the DAR using Henry as their Revolutionary War Patriot. Initially I was skeptical that he served, however more detailed studies of Hempfield and the muster rolls leads me to now believe Henry did serve, along with his brothers, George and David. The following is the application information for Annie and Susie Muma. Of note, for unknown reasons, their father changed his birth name from Solomon Franklin Mumma to Benjamin Franklin Muma. There is one error in their applications. Henry Mumma married Julianna Heckman, not a Hertzler. It was Henry's brother, Jacob, who married a Hertzler. I am not sure how they estimated a birth year for Henry of 1758, but it is probably fairly close. ************************************************************************** *********** The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 161, page 137 Mrs. Anne Elizabeth Muma Lee. As far as is know, he did not have a middle name of Henry. It is believed that this confusion was caused by the fact that Jacob's brother, Henry Mumma, migrated to Sharpsburg two years after Jacob, his younger brother. It is also interesting that both brothers names their first born children with the same first names, so some of the early researchers became confused and assumed that there were not two people, but one who used Jacob one time and Henry at other times. Hence, Jacob was sometimes incorrectly called Jacob Henry Mumma. This error is found in Robert Moomaw's book. Jacob was the original owner of the farm and land where the battle of Antietam took place during the Civil War. He had died by the time of the Civil War, but had willed this land to his youngest son, Samuel Mumma. In fact, when the War occurred, Samuel had turned the operation of the farm over to his son, Samuel Jr. Jacob migrated to Sharpsburg in 1796 with several other families from Lancaster. I believe that his sister, Barbara Mumma, also migrated with Jacob and his family. Jacob MUMA appears in the 1790 census for Hempfield Township of Lancaster County with 2 males over the age of 16 and 2 males less than 16. There were 4 females listed. This is more people than he had in his household, so it is likely that his sister, Barbara is living with them or it could be his brother, David, with his wife and children . Parents: George Anthony MUMMA and Beverly WEBER. Spouse: Elizabeth Newcomer HERTZLER. Jacob MUMMA and Elizabeth Newcomer HERTZLER were married. Juliana MUMMA8 was born between 1752 and 1758 in Lancaster Co, PA.8 Very little is known about Juliana. Her name and her husband's name are listed in her father's Will. In her mother's Will, no special monies are given to her for "remaining with her parents", so we asume she married around the age of 18. We do know that she was alive in 1788 when her mother's will was written. Parents: George Anthony MUMMA and Beverly WEBER. Spouse: David MELLINGER. David MELLINGER and Juliana MUMMA were married. Leonard MUMMA8 was born between 1690 and 1700.8 He was baptized on 5 Oct 1694 in Stolberg, Rheinland, Prussia.8 He died in Jul 1770 in Lancaster Co, PA.350 The data source is from the "Moomaw Newsletters" published by Margaret Dierenger, the "Moomaw, Mumma, Mumaw, Mumaugh Genealogy" by Robert Moomaw in 1990, the "Genealogy of the George Muma Family" by Richard Glenn Huffman, and my own personal investigations and those of previous researchers. Data source is Douglas Mumma, 2123 Farmington Place, Livermore, CA 94550 E-mail doug@mumma.org Leonard arrived in America 18 September 1732 from Rotterdam on the ship "Johnson" with a wife and five children were born Europe. His four remaining children were born in America. Leonard has been assigned the Henry Reference number of "2". The Henry Reference numbers of all of his descendants begin with the number 2 with a successive generation number added to the #2. Leonard's name is spelled in a variety of way on the various official documents throughout his life. It is written as Mumma, Muma, Mumah, Mummah, Muhman, Mummer, Mummy, and Momma as examples. It is the usual problem of an English court clerk attempting to write a German name and Anglicizing it. Likewise, his first name was spelled as Leonard, Lenhardt, and Leonardt. Hence it is not surprising that many of his children ended up with a wide variety of spellings of their surnames. The official lists of the German Immigrants who landed at Philadelphia, PA prior to the Revolutionary War were translated by the Pennsylvania German Society and published under title, "The German Pioneer" by Strassberger and Hinkle. After 1728, all ships captains were required to submit the names of all German immigrants aboard their ships. In addition, the immigrants themselves were required to go to the courthouse and sign two oaths. List # 21A is the captain's list of the Palentines who arrived in Philadelphia on September 18 (old style) 1732 on board the ship "Johnson" of London, commanded by David Crocket. Recorded by age groups were the following: men over 16 years, Leonard Momma; women over 14 years, Juliana Momma; boys under 16 years, Anthony Momma, David Momma, and Christian Momma; girls under 14 years, Juliana Momma, and Katharina Momma. The List #21C contains the signatures (or their Marks if they could not write) of the male immigrants over the age of 16 making an "oath of abjuration", in which they renounced any and all previous oaths to other Kings. Next, they then pledged alliegence to the King of England and to the colonial government. Their signatures for this oath is contained on List #21B. Leonard signed his name as Lenhart Mumma. I believe the spelling of MUMMA is quite clear in both lists. These signatures from both lists can be seen at the top of this page. The curved line over the "u" is a German shorthand notation for signifying that this letter is a "u" and not an "n" or "m" which are almost identical in German handwriting. Some researchers have suggested that this mark over the "u" might be an umlaut, but that is not the case. Leonard Mumma was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at New Holland, PA and all of his children born in America are recorded in the baptismal records: Anna Margaretta Mumma, born 1 Nov 1733; John Jacob Mumma, born 11 Dec 1735; Andrew Mumma, born 25 Dec 1738 and Leonard John Mumma, born 10 Mar 1742. On May 19, 1743 the Muddy Creek Reformed and Lutheran Church of East Cocalico Twp., Lancaster County was formed. It is one of the original "Union" churches in which the church building is shared by two different faiths. The Lutheran and Reformed (Calvinists) Churchs. The signatures of the charter members of the constitution of the church included Leonhardt Muhman. A list of catechumens for 1747 included the names of Juliana Mumma, Catherine Mumma and Anna Margaret Mumma, Leonard's daughters. It is very likely that Leonard Mumma and his wife, Juliana, are buried in the very old cemetery adjacent to the Muddy Creek Church, however the old stones were written in German are too weathered to be read. Thus we find that Leonard and his wife likely attended both Lutheran and Reformed service. European Connections - We do not know for certain where Leonard Mumma was born or lived in Europe. There is strong evidence that Leonard Mumma was living in the Grosskarlbach area of Germany, just prior to his immigration to America. There has been speculation that Leonard is the person listed as Johann Leonard Momma in a book called "Aachener Wappen und Genealogien", pp 5-8, volume II by Herman Macco, published 1908 in Aachen, Germany. This particular book contains a genealogy about the Momma family. Proof is not available that this Leonard Mumma descends from the Momma family of Aachen or Stolberg. Others have speculated that Leonard Mumma was originally Swiss and lived for a brief period of time in Germany prior to coming to America. Likewise there has been speculation that this family were French Huguenots who migrated from the Alsace-Lorraine area of north eastern France. Much research remains to firmly establish the European connections. The following facts are known: 1) On June 1, 1728, the Heuchelheim Evangelical-Lutheran Church records state that Eva Sÿbilla Muhmain of Großkarlbach married Heinrich Kayssners. Researchers have speculated that Muhmain and Muma are the same surname, just written differently by this church scribe. This person could fit as Johann Leonard Momma's sister, but is unlikely. 2) On 20 Sep 1763, the Heuchelheim Evangelical-Lutheran records show that an Eva Sybilla died and was buried on 21 Sep 1763 at the age of 66 years, 3 weeks which would put her birth about 30 Aug 1697, very close to the published baptism of 25 Aug 1697 for Eva Sibylla Momma of Aachen. 3) In 1743, Sebastian Heckman, citizen and master weaver married Anna Catharina Mumma after the required three proclamations on the 12 of October, 1742. We have not identified or connected Anna Catharina Mumma with the other Mummas. This record appears in the Reformed Church records of Grosskarlbach. All of the records from Reformed Church in Großkarlbach prior to 1742 are lost. Lutheran records do exist, however the Mumma name does not appear in any of the Grosskarlbach Church records. This record does demonstrate that the Surname spelled MUMMA was found in Grosskarlbach during the early 1700's. 4) From the Gerolsheim Lutheran Church records, "On February 23, 1789, David Muma, a widower from America, born at Großkarlbach, married Gertraud Neümann, a daughter of the school master of Gerolsheim." We believe this to be the David Muma, the son of Leonard. It is interesting that he returned to Germany after the death of his 2nd wife to seek another wife at the age of 62. This last record is the one that has influenced most researchers into believing that Leonard Mumma and family lived in Grosskarlbach prior to their emigration to America. There are many unanswered events surrounding this David Mumma and his sudden jouney back to "Holland". Whether he indeed is the person mentioned in the Grosskarlbach records as marrying Gertraud Neümann is still speculative. Leonard was very active in Earl Township, Lancaster County throughout his life, buying and selling property and being a member of the Muddy Creek Lutheran/Reformed Church. He died intestate with the original administration bond filed in Lancaster on 23 July, 1770 so it is likely he died only a few days prior to this date. Two of his sons and a close friend, Jacob Stoltz served as administrators of his estate. Spouse: Juliana \UNKNOWN\. Leonard MUMMA and Juliana \UNKNOWN\ were married. Magdalena MUMMA8 was born about 1751 in Lancaster Co, PA.8 She died about 1801 in Egypt, Luray, Page Co., VA.8 Robert Moomaw reported her birth as 12 Dec 1742 in his 1990 book on the Moomaw/Mumma family, however no evidence or proof for that date can be found and it is probably too early so that date was removed as her birth date. From her mother's will, we know that she lived with her parents for six years above her age. From this we would assume that she was about 24 years old when she married Jacob Strickler who is identified in Barbara's father's Will. Since Jacob's frist wife had died, he returned to Lancaster County to find a wife. and lived at We assume she then married Jacob Strickler after his first wife died. From his grandson, Adam Strickler's genealogy, written in 1885 (found in "Strickler Families" by Harry M. Strickler 1924, by Harry M. Strickler p 2-4), we learn that Magdalena gave birth to David Strickler who is known as "Col David Strickler" in April 10, 1777. It is not clear if his birth was preceeded by the birth of a sister, Barbara, on 12 Jan 1776. If we assume so, then the marriage likely took place in about 1775. If we use 1775 as the year of marriage, then Magdalena's birth would have been about 1751. Parents: George Anthony MUMMA and Beverly WEBER. Spouse: Jacob STRICKLER. Jacob STRICKLER and Magdalena MUMMA were married.8 Maria MUMMA8,45 was born about 1759 in hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA.8 She died between Nov 1788 and Apr 1793 in hempfield Twp., Lancaster Co., PA.8 We know that Jacob married Mary Mumma after Mary's father's death because the marriage is not acknowledged in his Will (Lancaster Will book E, vol 1, page 368). From her mother's Will (Barbara Weber Mumma - Lancaster Will book F, vol 1, page 78] we learn that Mary was now the wife of Jacob Hirtzler and remained at home "9 years over her age with her parents". If we assume that "her age" means 18 years old, and that she was still at home until her father died, we can estimate her birth year. Father's death was 1786 at which time she would have been 9 years over the age of 18. Therefore 1786 - (18 + 9) = 1759 Robert Moomaw's 1991 book lists an Anne Marie Mumma [ref #215] & Jacob Hertzler on page 7 as having a child by the name of Jacob Hertzler, born 1808. Clearly this is in error and is incorrect. This Anne is a child of Jacob Mumma and is listed on page 5 as reference #1335 Parents: George Anthony MUMMA and Beverly WEBER. Spouse: Jacob HERTZLER. |
