Both were imprisoned at Oethenbach where Felix died. Adelheid escaped the prison in 1646. The Strassberger family account says that "-- he was treated with ruthless rigor at Oethenbach, for they gave him nothing to eat for several days, so that even some criminals, who were confined in an adjoining apartment, had compassion on him, and with difficulty conveyed food to him through an opening in the partition. The door keepers observing this, removed Felix to another prison. They at length gave him some food, but his digestive organs had become so impaired by long fasting, that his stomach refused to retain its food, wherefore, he prepared himself for death. In this state of weakness they carried him to a church and threw him under a bench, where he immediately expired, having previously commended his soul to God."

I think I have found the source of much of the confusion surrounding the
identity of his wife. In the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society card file
the original entry was Ann. Someone later typed in Ann Engle. The Barbara
Snavely is a misreading by many researchers. She is the second wife of his
son Johannes. Her birth and death dates are too late for Jacob Landis. The
card is rather poorly prepared. I need to check out this Ann Engle thing, but
I am becoming more convinced that Ira Landis was right with Esther Barr.

Jakob LANDIS was born about 1654 in Alsace, France.1 His occupation was that of a linen weaver. Jacob fled Alsace at the time of the wars in Alsace. In 1675 he was sent 30 florin. An entry in the record books states that he was residing in Froschwiler, Alsace, in the district of Montbeliard where his property was plundered by soldiers. In 1676, he was living in Colmar with his brother, Hans Heinrich. Later that year Jakob showed up in Zurich with his pregnant wife and one sick child, very miserably clothed and mistreated by the soldiers. He provided written testimony that he and his wife had been good members of the Reformed Church in Alsace, and additional funds were given them by Zurich authorities, presumably out of the Hans Landis estate funds. A final reference states that Jacob was given money in 1678 because his wife had become seriously ill in Alsace. He also suffered an injury requiring surgery, and he also had the misfortune of losing his linen-weaving mill in Alsace. Parents: Hans Heinrich LANDIS and Barbara BUEHLER.
