It's Football Season

Football Player
Go Get 'Em
Tonight I had a new experience. I have gone to many football games over the years. When I was teaching at Millersville University, I seldom missed a home game in 30 years. When I was in high school I also went to many games. I have even gone to a few NFL games. But tonight was different. I saw my 9-year-old grandson, Joshua, play.

Have you ever been to a midget football game? They play on a regulation field. There are referees in striped shirts, a play-by-play announcer, an electric scoreboard, field lights, cheerleaders, coaches and lots of parents watching these kids play. I was impressed with the whole production. I have questions about how much pressure we put on these kids, but they seemed to be enjoying themselves. I guess that's all that matters.

Joshua didn't start, but he got to play quite a bit in the second half. He is an offensive lineman. They don't get much glory. Their names are never mentioned by the announcer. But they are an important part of the team. Joshua played well on the last touchdown drive of the evening for his team. They won the game 20 - 14.

It got rather chilly by the time the game was over. He plays on the C team. The D teams played first. Then the older kids played after that. It makes quite an evening. This whole thing was quite different than the football we played when I was a kid. We had pickup teams and made up the plays on the spot. I suspect that we had just as much fun as these kids, but times are different now. Everything is done with much more polish and production today.

Before I quit, I did want to say congratulations to Joshua and his team for a fine victory and a well-played game. I saw no fighting nor cheap hits. The parents and other fans conducted themselves like ladies and gentlemen. I was impressed with that. After watching the behavior of "adults" playing the game of professional football, this was refreshing. Good Luck, Joshua.

With Love, Pa-Pa
