A long time goal of mine has been accomplished. Since retiring as a mathematics teacher twenty-one years ago, I have pursued many new interests. As far as I'm concerned, that is what retirement is all about. Why retire if you are going to do the same things you did before, only without pay.

For a large part of the past twenty-one years, I have maintained a web site and have shared with you something I call my Thought for the Week. I must be honest with you. Many of my thoughts were written for other purposes. Especially most of the prayers and devotionals were written to use with the choirs that I have been a part of. Even many of the poems and hymns were inspired in that setting. However, I have also written many things including the essays, personal stories, and humorous pieces specifically for the web site.

I decided some time ago that I need to put these writings together in some more permanent form. Since it is very difficult to get a major publisher to even look at an unknown author, particularly with a varied collection of this sort, I decided to self-publish. I began editing and re-writing much of what I had written and I tried to organize the material in some meaningful way. I even printed out several copies of what I thought might be the final version.

A year ago I contacted Masthof Press in Elverson, PA and they gave me some guidelines and a quote for publication. I then began the final process of editing my manuscript. I designed the cover and submitted the final copy with the pages laid out exactly in the form to be printed. Since no type must be set, this form of publishing is very inexpensive.I have given away more than 100 copies to family, friends, and some libraries. The book is simply an anthology of my writings, and may or may not be of interest to others. However, my major goal is to make it possible for my work to live at least a while after my demise. How long it lasts is beyond my control.

With the advent of ebooks, and devices for reading them, I decided to submit my book to Amazon.com and have it published as a Kindle edition. I fixed up numerous mistakes and made the language more inclusive. I even added some new material. The book is now available for downloading at a cost of $5.99 per copy. You can obtain a copy of Footpaths Through the Forest from Amazon.com by clicking on the link. The following information applies to the page on Amazon.com. If you prefer you can also download a free sample of the book from the same page. If you do not have a Kindle, you can download it to your computer. Be sure to select the proper destination under "deliver to." However, for viewing the book on something other than a Kindle, you must download the particular free program available on the same page. See the right side of the page. Thank you for your interest.
