The Yoke of Christ is Easy

Several years ago I bought a CD that was made by the Boston Camerata, entitled "The American Vocalist." The album was based in part on hymns from an old hymnal by the same name. I was fascinated with this early American music. I began a search on Ebay to find a copy of the old hymnal. I finally found a copy and purchased it. It was not a first edition, but a second edition. I prize this hymnal very highly as part of my hymnal collection.

I was sitting at my keyboard one day, playing through some of the tunes in the hymnal, when I came across one entitled "THE OLD SHIP OF ZION." It had a catchy tune, and some phrases started going through my mind, so I sat down and penned one verse of a hymn to match the tune. I then forgot about it, but a few weeks ago, I came across this verse on my desk and decided to write two more verses. What follows is the result of that effort. I hope you like it. Be sure your sound is turned on to hear the music.

The Yoke of Christ is Easy
Sung to the tune: OLD SHIP OF ZION

We gather together in friendship and love,
With a bond of hope that's never ending.
We come from a world where it's "push comes to shove,"
And our tasks seem ever more demanding.
Oh the yoke of Christ is easy and his burden's light,
And he gives a peace that passes understanding.

As followers of Christ, and with new life endowed,
Count the cost, take up your cross, and bear it.
The Body of Christ, as the servant of God,
Shares a crown with all those who will wear it.
Oh the yoke of Christ is easy and his burden's light,
And he gives a peace that passes understanding.

With days often troubled by sorrow and strife,
There is hope for folks in every nation.
A Savior is waiting to give them new life;
He has brought to all a great salvation.
Oh the yoke of Christ is easy and his burden's light,
And he gives a peace that passes understanding.
