He Is Risen!

The resurrection of Christ is the pivotal event in the life of the Christian faith. Whether you interpret it as a physical or a spiritual resurrection, it is the most important aspect of our faith. It represents many things:

  • The Messiah has survived all that evil put in his way. He achieved victory over sin and death.
  • The Church is founded on a living Lord. His Spirit guides his people.
  • We too have hope of a coming resurrection and eternal life. Our hope is in Him.
  • New life comes to us again and again, even as we stumble down that long and narrow path.
  • He said, "My Yoke is Easy and My Burden is Light. Take up your cross and follow Me."

    I have always liked the symbolism found in John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress." After a long and treacherous journey, as Christian stands before the cross at Calvary, his burden suddenly drops from his back and rolls down the hill. It rolls into the empty tomb never to be seen again. That is how the resurrection hope comes to each of us as we carry our burdens to Calvary's hill. Truly the resurrection of Christ is also the pivotal event in our personal lives.

    I authored the original hymn that follows. I also wrote a hymn tune for it. The idea for the hymn came during a sermon on Easter morning. I jotted down some notes during the sermon and finished it later. I hope you enjoy it.

    Dawn Breaks Forth
    The Dawning of a New Day

    Life Goes On

    The sun breaks forth in Eastern skies;
    Cold darkness yields to warmth and light.
    It runs its course, and then it dies
    As daylight fades to coming night.
    And life goes on.

    A child is born and with a cry
    It seeks the warmth of Mother's breast.
    It grows and learns to say goodby;
    Too soon its life is laid to rest.
    But life goes on.

    God's Son is born, in manger laid.
    The inn is full, there is no room.
    Too soon the ransom must be paid;
    His body laid in borrowed tomb.
    Will life go on?

    The Son breaks forth in Easter skies.
    Our Lord is raised, the battle done;
    He conquers death, our Saviour lives!
    Eternal Glory has been won.
    New life goes on!
