On Maundy Thursday of Holy Week, Christians all over the world remember the Last Supper and Jesus' experience in the Garden. The scriptures say that after supper, He and the disciples sang a hymn and went out into the night. According to the story, they went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray. After a while, Jesus took Peter, James, and John and went deeper into the garden. Eventually he went off by himself.
He asked the Father, if it be his will, to take the cup of death away from him. Eventually Jesus accepted the fact that his death was inevitable. The scriptures say that while he was praying the sweat fell from him as great drops of blood. His agony as he fought this last battle with the enemy must have been almost unbearable.
A few years ago, I wrote a little hymn in which I tried to portray this scene. I entitled the hymn, "Savior In the Garden." The hymn tune is known as JESU MEINE FREUDE. The composer was Johann Cruger, 1653. The tune was harmonized by J. S. Bach in 1723. This hymn was recently published by Brethren Press in the Lenten and Easter supplement to Hymnal, A Worship Book, which is also a publication of Brethren Press.
Savior in the Garden
Savior in the garden, crying "Abba Father,
Take this cup from me!
Lord of all creation, why hast thou forsaken?
Who will comfort me?
Not my will but Yours be done;
God, I give my life a ransom
For the healing of the Nations."
