Modern School Days - a Poem

Our grandparents looked back on school days with fondness, remembering slates, the three R's, calico dresses, bare feet, etc. While our school days were not quite that idyllic, they were for the most part filled with learning, and except for the rare schoolyard fight, rather tranquil. We enjoyed school, but would not admit it at the time.

I got to thinking about my grandchildren. How will they remember school days? Today's schools are quite different from the schools most of us knew. I think in most cases a lot of learning still takes place. However, I thought it might be fun to rewrite the old song "School Days" into a modern, somewhat stereotypical, form for this new generation. It goes something like this:

School Days

School days, Schmool days,
Good old being cool days.
Random drug testing and locker checks;
We got new cars, but the teachers; wrecks.

You wore a brass stud in your tongue.
I had a tattoo of a bong.
We wrote on the walls to have some fun,
When we were a pair of cool dudes.
