Well, the sky did not fall. Talk about a non-event! What ever happened to the Y2K bug? New Year's Day came and went. The power is still on. The phone works. The Internet works. Nobody went without water. The ATM machines work. The infrastructure is intact.
I don't know about your computer, but with a precautionary patch on several of my old computers, they all worked perfectly today. My car works; my microwave works; My TV and VCR work. The only thing that didn't work today was me. I must confess that I left the dishes for my wife to do. Although I did cook the pork and sauerkraut, so I guess I worked, too.
Again all the televangelists who predicted the rapture and/or doomsday were wrong. I love it! Years ago, my old bible teacher had words of wisdom about those who predict the end of the world. He said, "If you look at their batting average, it is exactly .000". I am really weary of those who promote their own programs by spreading fear in the hearts of those who are easily persuaded that the end is imminent.
I did think the stock market would take a big hit just before the New Year. That didn't happen either. I think we often do not give people credit for the wisdom which they do have. As often happens, the average person had less trepidation about Y2K than did the pundits.
We can also be thankful and grateful to our security people that there were no major acts of terrorism this weekend. (We did learn later that there was a serious attempt that failed.) It is also my prayer that the changeover in leadership in Russia will continue to be a peaceful one.
Perhaps now we can get back to normal, and our lives will continue to move forward. We do have an election coming up this year. I hope that it will proceed with civility. Let us try to treat each other with respect, and do all we can to help each other reach a brighter tomorrow. Happy New Year to all.
