| Contemplation |
When we were young, we spent most of our time looking into the future. The years ahead seemed endless. We dreamed of the wonderful things that were to come. We put thoughts of the dark side of life from our minds.
Now that we are old, there seems to be so little time left. Life races at a faster and faster pace. We remember the past, the good and the bad, and we spend a great deal of time looking backwards.
When did this change occur? Was it when our work became drudgery? Was it when we faced seemingly insurmountable crises? Was it when the nest began to empty? Or was it when aches and pains became a more dominant feature in our lives?
I suppose it matters not what changes us. The journey from there to here takes many twists and turns. But it is surely made more tolerable if we have someone with whom we can share life's dreams and life's memories.
