A Remarkable Woman

Martha and Mary
Martha and Her
Daughter, Mary
My mother-in-law, Martha Auker, was born on October 20, 2909 to Charles Livengood and Gertrude Hertzler Livengood in Uniontown, PA and was raised at Mechanics Grove, Lancaster County, PA. She has outlived her two husbands, Christian Musser and Clarence Auker. Like her namesake in the Bible, she has always been a hardworking woman. She lived on a farm, raised two daughters, Mary and Mildred, and numerous children from child welfare agencies. Mildred died in 1999 after her second bout with cancer.

Martha used to take in boarders, worked in a factory, milked a cow, stripped tobacco, planted a garden, cooked, cleaned, did laundry, and yet found time to give a great deal of love to those around her. Her life has not always been easy. She has sometimes experienced a great deal of pain and heartache. Yet she has always remained cheerful even in times of adversity. What a remakable woman!

She usually spends her birthdays in the bosom of her family and friends. Our efforts at celebrating this day with her can in no way repay her for all she has done for us. Thank you, Mother, for all your love and caring down through the years. We love You. May God bless you and keep you and hold you in the palm of His hand. Happy Birthday, Mother.
