On Tuesday, November 4, 2008, the people of the United States of America will again exercise their franchise as we elect a President, Vice President, in addition to a new Congress. This election will be a defining moment in our history. A new generation of voters has been registering to vote in large numbers. The Democratic party has been the recipient of the lion's share of these registrants. The determining factor in the election will probably be the voter turnout.
I doubt if I will persuade many of my readers to change their preference for a candidate. However, this is my web site and I am here to announce my preference. Although I originally registered as a Republican in 1951, I have only ever voted for one Republican for president. That was Dwight David Eisenhower. Many years ago I re-registered as a Democrat. So you see that it would be rather unlikely for me to vote for John McCain.
I do indeed plan to vote for the Obama/Biden ticket. There are a number of reasons for that choice besides my long-held Democratic leanings. I truly believe that the Democrats are more likely to solve these problems than is the GOP.
The illegal war in Iraq must be ended as soon as it is reasonably possible. Those billions can better be spent for worthwhile causes.
We now know that trickle-down economics has not worked. We must rebuild the economy from the bottom up. It is time for the unions to be rebuilt and for the working person to get a break.
The health care system is not available to a large segment of the American public. Each human being has a right to health care. We must institute universal health care for all.
Social security and Medicare need to be put on a sound basis, and that means "not through privatization."
We cannot afford to have any more right-wing justices appointed to the Supreme Court if we are to maintain our rights as citizens.
These are just some of the reasons that I plan to vote a straight Democratic ticket in this election. These things are too important to be left to a party that no longer cares about the needs of the sick, the poor, and the forgotten masses. However you plan to vote, please get out and vote this weekend or on Tuesday of next week.
