Some Thoughts on System Crashes

A Computer
A Troubled Computer
I spent the past week straightening out some major system problems in my computer. I think I may have solved them all. I was going to say, "Knock on wood," but there is no wood in my computer. Perhaps I could knock on my head. Some of my problems may have been caused by the wood between my ears. I must say they all occurred well before Friday the 13th, so it was not a "black cat" sort of thing.

However, it got me to thinking how much our lives resemble the computer. We also have system crashes in our lives, and it is not always easy to fix them. We must sometimes rely on friends, family, or even professionals for help. There are also times when we must rely on the one who put us together to get the whole mess straightened out.

My computer has a number of programs that can be used to analyze problems and even fix them. I am often amazed at how the computer can repair itself. The human body and mind also have the capability of repairing themselves. However, this time those programs did not do the job. The problems were much deeper than simple repairs that can be made by Norton System Works. They involved the interaction of elements of my system software.

You must understand that I used a great deal of trial and error before I happened to discover the causes and solutions of the problems I was experiencing. Please don't attribute more savvy to me than what I have. However, the problems really arose from software related to the particular components installed in my computer. Since I built the computer, I was aware of those software elements. Hence, I was able to deal with them.

I could have taken the computer to a repair shop and had them analyze the problem. if I weren't so "cheap." They may or may not have been able to fix it. However, the builder of the computer has a more intimate knowledge of its inner workings than does the repairman. Similarly, our creator has a more intimate knowledge of how we are put together than even the best professional. So there are times when we must rely on the help of the builder of our systems.

I hope you do not misinterpret this analogy. Computer repair shops and doctors and psychiatrists have their place. We should avail ourselves of their services when necessary. I am simply saying, "Don't let the Master Builder out of the loop." After all he set up the evolutionary processes and I am sure kept an eye on them as life progressed to its present state. I wonder about something. Are we simply the human "Pentium IV" running "Windows XP?" Could the creator already have a "Pentium V" waiting in the wings? That's something to think about.
