We Plough the Fields and Scatter the Good Seed on the Land

An Abundant Harvest
A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell on the path and was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. Some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered for lack of moisture. Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it. Some fell into good soil, and when it grew, it produced a hundredfold. - Luke 8:5-8

The rich soil of Lancaster County, PA is surely a gift from the Creator. Many of the farms have been handed down from generation to generation. Most of these farmers, no matter what their religious persuasion, are people of deep faith. Religion, culture, and the soil are so intertwined that it is hard to separate them. The farmer understands that he plows the soil, plants the seeds, and reaps the crops, but that God provides the rain and the sun that cause the plants to grow.

In late March or early April when the ground has sufficiently dried out, the farmer begins the process of growing the summer's crops. Plows are dragged through the soil either by tractors or a team of mules. The seed is planted, and the spring rains begin the process of nurturing the seed and the young plants. By the Fourth of July, the corn is often shoulder high. Then comes the beginning of the harvest. Tomatoes, sweet corn, and cantaloupes begin to appear at roadside stands, where the abundance is shared with the residents of the county.

The cycle of life continues throughout the fall and winter. Fields are cleaned up and prepared for the winter season. Manure is spread to provide nutrients for the next growing season. The snows cover the ground and life comes to a standstill. However, deep under the snow much activity is taking place that will prepare the soil for the coming of spring. God is continually at work behind the scenes.

Jesus was aware of the relationship of soil to faith. A number of his parables related faith activity to the process of farming. The parable of the sower cited above is an excellent example. Paul also taught along these lines. He said, "I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God provided the growth." We have a tendency to seek the praise of others for what we accomplish. However, the praise should really go to God. We are but tenants on God's earth, and are here to be caretakers. The earth is the Lord's and he provides the abundant harvest.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for the abundant life and for providing for our needs. We have not always been good caretakers of this planet. We have used it in ways that could bankrupt future generations. Give us a sense of responsibility. Teach us to share generously with those who do not have access to the great abundance that we have. Curb our greed that we may indeed become good stewards of your land. Amen.
