A Visit to the Mountain

I Lift My Eyes
|
From September 5 to 17, 1998 my wife Mary and I took a trip to Alaska. We had a wonderful trip even though it was very cold for that time of year. We even experienced a snowfall in Denali National Park. It was very refreshing to leave behind the pressing problems of our daily existence and to spend a little time communing with nature and with its Creator. The magnificence of the ancient mountains and the silence of the vast open spaces speak loudly of their Creator's handiwork. I was reminded again of the importance of preserving this fragile planet where we are privileged to live. The Psalmist must have been looking to the ancient hills when he penned this beautiful Psalm:
Psalm 121 A Psalm of Assurance of God's Presence
I lift up my eyes to the hills-- from where will my help come?
My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber
.
He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is your shade at your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time on and forevermore.
Prayer: God of the eternal hills, we look to you for our help in times of ease as well as in times of trouble. How small we are in the vastness of your universe. Yet you keep your eye on the sparrow, and we know you watch over us. May we tune our lives to the harmony of your creation and live out our days in touch with our maker's will. You speak to us with a still small voice when we take the time to listen. Thank you for bringing us safely home from Alaska and we know that you will also bring us safely home when our journey on earth is completed. Amen
