| No Salt on My Eggs, Please! |
The sun was warm, but there was a nip in the September air as Abraham sat under the oak tree sipping his morning orange juice. He smiled when he saw his old friend Melchizedek coming up the lane. "Greetings, Mel, old friend," he called. "Come and sit a spell. What would you like to drink?" Just as they got settled, Isaac came bounding out of the tent. "Dad, I'm going over to see Rebekah," he muttered. "Ok, son, but be home by dark."
"Abe, that's a fine son you have." "Yes, Mel, I am real proud of him," said Abraham. "I hope he has a lot more sense than that Lot, my brother's son. What a yutzh he was. Every time he got his butt in a crack, he wanted me to pull it out. His problem was that he couldn't stay out of Sodom. Remember the time after the battle in the tar pits, when Sodom was captured and they took Lot prisoner? If it hadn't been for your help, I probably wouldn't have freed him."
"Boy, we were sure lucky. I remember we had a big victory ceremony after that one," replied Melchizedek. "I guess he learned his lesson after that episode." "Are you kidding, Mel? It wasn't long until he was back in Sodom again. Yahweh once told me he was fed up with Sodom. He said that he was going to destroy that crazy city. But, do you think that fathead, Lot, would get out? Think again. I begged Yahweh not to do it, but he had his mind made up. Finally, some of Yahweh's people had to literally drag Lot and his family out of town. But Lot's wife kept looking back, and was soon vaporized into a pile of salt. For me, that was the day that salt lost its savor. I haven't eaten a dill pickle since that time."
"And Lot had the nerve to call you naive," said Melchizedek, rolling his eyes. "By the way, I had heard that he had a couple of kids. When did he take another wife?" "You don't want to even go there," replied Abe as he shook his head. "Now I'm curious, Abe," said Mel with a twinkle in his eye. "Well, it seems Lot liked the Vino. His daughters got him drunk and did the deed with him. They were crazier than their old lady. That's how Lot came to sire Moab and Ammon."
"So wise old Lot wanted to live in Sodom? What a loser," said Melchizedek as he got up to leave. "What a loser!"
