King Jesus Rules with Justice
I wrote this poem for the advent booklet at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren in the year 2006. Christmas is so much more than stars, angels, shepherds, wise men, and all the trappings that go with our modern celebration of the event. Christmas is the inbreaking of the Kingdom of God into our world in the form of King Jesus. May he reign in your heart and mine as we again look at the birth of this new king.
- The Old Profressor
Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to a king's son. May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice. Psalm 72:1,2
Let justice roll down like mighty waters;
In righteousness, Oh my sons and daughters!
The poor cry out in their pain and despair.
Do my people ignore them or do they care?
The maiden was told she will bear a king
Who will fill all the hungry with every good thing.
He will bring to the lowly a sparkling new day,
But the mighty and rich, he'll send empty away.
He stood midst the people and opened the scroll.
Good news for the poor, may the sick be made whole.
The deaf ear will open, and the blind eye will see.
Oppressed and imprisoned will now be set free.
They put him to death and they spat on his face,
But his love and forgiveness brought mercy and grace.
Yes, the King comes to all and in justice will reign,
In a new Kingdom birthed out of torture and pain.
