Driving like Jehu

Chariot racing
Jehu wins again. Yeah, right!

And it came to pass that King Jehoshophat had a son, named Jehu. Now Jehu could not jump as high as his father, so he was not known as Jumping Jehu. But he did love racing chariots. He became the top driver in the NASCHAR circuit. (That stood for National Stock Chariot Racing.) And so his fame spread far and wide. Whenever someone would drive their chariots in a speedy or reckless fashion, it was said that they "drove like Jehu." That expression is still used today, but of course sports cars are a lot more speedy than horse-drawn chariots.

Let me tell you how he became a racing champion. He wanted to fool Joram, son of Ahab, the king of Israel, into believeing that he came to Israel in peace. So he put a bumper sticker on his chariot that said, "I come in peace." Actually, he was planning to kill Joram and all his household, because Elisha told him to destroy all the house of Ahab.

Whenever he was having a particularly bad day of racing, the other drivers would tease him and pull up beside him and yell, "Thus says the king, 'Is it peace?'" Jehu responded, "What have you to do with peace? Fall in behind me."(1) Of course, since he was the son of the former king of Judah, they thought it best to obey him. Chariot after chariot would do the same thing. Those redneck NASHCAR racers weren't too bright. By the time the checkered flag came down, Jehu was out in front and all the other drivers were lined up behind him. So by the end of the season, he was number one in the Wine Cup point standings.

One day he rode his chariot up to the house of Queen Jezebel, Ahab's widow. The sentinel said to King Joram, "It looks like the driving of Jehu son of Nimshi; for he drives like a maniac."(2) When Joram saw Jehu, he said, "Is it peace, Jehu?" He answered, "What peace can there be, so long as the many whoredoms and sorceries of your mother Jezebel continue?"(3) Well, you don't tell the king that his mother is a whore and keep the peace. That ended Jehu's driving career. He was suspended from further racing in the NASCHAR organization. If you want to know what happened next, you'll have to read it for yourself. I've said enough already. You'll find the information in 2King 9:23-28.
